The pandemic has pushed Julie Anne San Jose to be more creative.

In a recent interview with Bulletin Entertainment and other members of media, she revealed writing three songs since the community quarantine started, with more on the way.

“’Yung mga songs na isinusulat ko ay for my upcoming album,” she said. “‘Yung iba naman ay for collaboration. I’m excited about it pero we’re still working on the tracks tsaka kung paano ipo-produce. And lyrics and melody kailangan pang ayusin kasi demo tracks pa lang nagagawa.”

Does she find herself writing darker or more hopeful songs now?

Well, it depends on her mood but generally, the songs have positive messages.

On the side, Julie plans to build up her YouTube channel and they’re already working out the content. There will be more collaborations and covers, the singer hinted.

Asked if she misses performing to a live audience, Julia said she does as nothing beats the experience of doing that.

It would have to wait, though. In the meantime, there are online shows to do; especially ones with songs that uplift the spirits or even raise funds for the needy.

An example is the recent “Jam With Julie” that saw the Kapuso singer wherein she performed songs by OPM bands, including Parokya ni Edgar, Sponge Cola, Eraserheads, Hale, and Rivermaya.

Asked how she decided on the concept, the artist revealed listening to classic OPM rock songs brings back a lot of memories from her high school days.

“Sarap lang pakinggan ng mga kanta nila kasi ganu’n ‘yung kinalakihan kong music nu’ng high school ako tas nabibit ko sa college hanggang tumanda,” she shared. “Hindi kasi sila naluluma. Talagang lahat makakasabay ang tao.”

Julie has new song out titled “Better.” Written by Julie herself, the song debuted at the top of the iTunes Philippines All-Genre Chart upon release.
She also launched the #BetterDanceChallenge on TikTok a few months ago for her fans to follow.

Netizens also gushed over Julie’s cover of Chito Miranda, Gloc 9, and the late Francis Magalona’s “Bagsakan.” Her rapping skills caught the eye of Chito himself, the Parokya Ni Edgar’s lead singer.

As for her lifestyle since the pandemic started, Julie said there have been “pros and cons.”

“Pero ayokong mag-focus sa nega kasi ang dami ng nangyayari sa mundo. And kailangan natin gawin nowadays ay magtulungan, at ipagdasal ‘yung mga frontliners na tumutulong sa mga kababayan,” she started.

Like with most everyone, the pandemic has allowed Julie Anne more bonding time with her family. She now understands all the more, the value of having family by your side especially during a health crisis. While on lockdown, they played board games and even badminton.

Julie also dabbled in cooking and baking, and reignited her passion for sketching.

“So ‘yung mga nagagawa ko before na hindi ko nagagawa, binalikan ko ulit ngayon. So hopefully painting din. Ta’s I’m also planning to take online course pero hindi ko pa alam kung ano.”

Once it’s okay, Julie Anne intends to travel anew. She along with members of her family had planned to go to Japan but the COVID-19 outbreak overtook them.
