We can sense palpable excitement in Philippine television with the recently announced partnership between ABS-CBN and TV5. The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) welcomed the move as it can lead to “healthier competition” in the local TV industry.

KBP president Herman Basbaño, in an interview on One News’ The Chiefs, said competition brings out the best in us.

The unique, landmark deal between the two networks is perhaps the most exciting development in the entertainment industry this month and in years, more than the trending finale of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano and the most-talked about kickoff of Darna, with the KBP foretelling that this will lead to healthier competition that can bring out the best choices for viewers.

Infrawatch PH, a policy think tank, meanwhile said the expected synergy between ABS-CBN and TV5 will allow swift delivery of public service, entertainment, and information.

Consumer groups have also expressed excitement on the Kapamilya-Kapatid deal, with CitizenWatch describing it as “good news to the viewing public,” while the Bantay Konsyumer, Kalsada, Kuryente hailed it as “an exciting development that will fill a void left when the Channel 2 franchise was not renewed by Congress.”

Indeed, better times await audiences with this merger. Here’s hoping this will energize furthermore content consumption on free TV.

The collaboration between channels 2 and 5 comes close on the heels of the highly anticipated airing of Darna. The highly charged series on its opening week quickly captured viewers with thrilling fight scenes, effects, costumes, and colorful characters . Darna’s story of bravery is also an inspiration to today’s generation of viewers.
